How we help

Trauma and PTSD

Trauma can stay with you long after the event: intrusive memories or nightmares, a body that stays on alert, avoiding reminders, or a sense that something in you has not had the chance to settle. These reactions are understandable responses to overwhelming experiences, and they can change with the right support.

Common reasons people seek help

  • A single traumatic event, such as an accident, assault or critical incident at work.
  • The cumulative effect of difficult experiences over years, including in childhood.
  • Symptoms of post-traumatic stress: flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, numbness or avoidance.
  • Difficulty trusting, sleeping or feeling safe, even when life is now stable.

How psychological care may help

Trauma therapy moves at your pace. The early work is about safety and stability: understanding what is happening in your nervous system and building ways to settle it. From there, where it is appropriate, we work directly with the memories and meanings that keep the trauma alive, using trauma-focused approaches with strong evidence behind them. You remain in control of what is discussed and when.

What therapy typically involves

Sessions are structured and predictable, which matters when the problem itself is unpredictability. Liam will explain each step before it happens. The length of treatment varies widely depending on what you have been through and what you want from therapy.

Is telehealth suitable for trauma work?

Telehealth is suitable for many people, particularly where being in your own space makes it easier to feel safe. Liam will talk with you about whether it is the right fit for your situation, and about what support you have around you. For complex or severe presentations, a more intensive or in-person service may be recommended.

Fees, Medicare and referrals

Sessions are $198 for 50+ minutes. Where you’re eligible, with a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a valid referral, Medicare rebates $101.55 per session for up to 10 sessions a year, leaving $96.45 out of pocket. The practice can submit the claim for you after your appointment.

You don’t need a referral to book. If you want to use Medicare, ask your GP for a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral; it can be arranged before or after your first session. Full fee and Medicare information.
