Getting started
From first thought to first session.
Most people think about getting help for a long time before they do anything about it. Here is exactly what happens once you decide to, so there are no unknowns.
The steps
- 01
Decide whether you want to use Medicare
You can book without a referral and pay the full fee. Or you can see your GP first for a Mental Health Treatment Plan, which brings a $101.55 rebate on each $198 session ($96.45 out of pocket). Many people book their first session and get the plan in parallel; it just needs to reach us before your first rebated session. How Medicare works
- 02
Get to know Liam
Read Liam’s profile so you know how he works before you start. If you have a question first, ask.
- 03
Book through Halaxy
Halaxy is the secure practice-management system Cerenova uses. Booking buttons here open Halaxy in a new tab. The link opens on the therapy appointment, so you pick from the times shown as available, enter your details and complete a short intake and consent form. The fee is shown before you confirm, and a confirmation email follows straight away.
- 04
Before the session
Find somewhere private with a reasonable internet connection. A phone works; a laptop or tablet is more comfortable. Headphones help. Your video link is in your confirmation email. There’s nothing else to prepare, though some people find it useful to jot down what they want to get out of it.
- 05
Your first appointment
Mostly conversation. Liam will explain confidentiality and its limits, ask what’s brought you here and what you’d like to be different, and together you’ll agree on a direction. You don’t need to tell your whole story in one go.
- 06
After that
Sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly to start, then spaced out as things settle. You book each one through Halaxy at a time that suits you. If you’re on a Treatment Plan, your psychologist writes to your GP after six sessions and at the end of treatment, as Medicare requires.
A few honest notes
It’s normal to feel nervous. Almost everyone does before a first session, including people who have done this before. Liam knows that and will make the start easy.
You can say if it isn’t working. The fit between you and your psychologist matters more than almost anything else. If after a session or two it doesn’t feel right, say so. Liam won’t be offended, and he’ll help you find someone who suits you better.
Telehealth isn’t for every situation. If your psychologist thinks you’d be better served by in-person or more intensive care, they’ll tell you and help you find it. And if you need help right now, please don’t wait for an appointment: Cerenova is not a crisis service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000. For 24-hour support, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or the Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467.
Start with one session.
