How we help

First responders and critical incidents

People in emergency services, defence, health and similar roles are exposed to things most people never see, often repeatedly, and often with the expectation that they simply absorb it. Liam has experience working with first responders and with the organisations around them.

Common reasons people seek help

  • The aftermath of a specific critical incident.
  • Cumulative stress from years of exposure.
  • Sleep problems, irritability, withdrawal or drinking more than you would like.
  • Difficulty switching between work and home.
  • Wanting to address something early, before it becomes a bigger problem.

How psychological care may help

Therapy with someone who understands the culture and demands of the job can make a real difference. Work may include processing critical incidents, treating post-traumatic stress where it has developed, rebuilding sleep and recovery, and finding ways to protect the parts of life that the job tends to crowd out. Liam has a particular interest in first responder wellbeing and in the organisational side of critical incident response.

Confidentiality

Sessions are confidential within the usual legal and ethical limits, which your psychologist will explain at the start. Attending by telehealth means you do not need to be seen walking into a clinic.

Funding

Sessions may be funded through Medicare with a Mental Health Treatment Plan, or privately. If your service or employer is funding sessions, let us know when you get in touch so the arrangements can be confirmed first.

Fees, Medicare and referrals

Sessions are $198 for 50+ minutes. Where you’re eligible, with a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a valid referral, Medicare rebates $101.55 per session for up to 10 sessions a year, leaving $96.45 out of pocket. The practice can submit the claim for you after your appointment.

You don’t need a referral to book. If you want to use Medicare, ask your GP for a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral; it can be arranged before or after your first session. Full fee and Medicare information.
