How we help
Depression and low mood
Depression is more than feeling sad. It can be flatness, exhaustion, irritability, losing interest in things you used to enjoy, or a sense that nothing is worth the effort. It is also very treatable, and reaching out when it feels hardest is often the most important step.

Common reasons people seek help
- A low mood that has lasted weeks or months and is affecting daily life.
- Withdrawing from people, work or activities that used to matter.
- Trouble with sleep, energy, concentration or motivation.
- Feeling stuck after a loss, a setback or a major change.
How psychological care may help
Effective therapy for depression works on several fronts at once: the thinking patterns that keep mood low, the behaviours that shrink life down, and the circumstances or losses that may have set things off. Cognitive behaviour therapy, behavioural activation and acceptance and commitment therapy all have good evidence, and your psychologist will draw on what fits you.
If medication is part of your treatment, or might be, your psychologist can work alongside your GP or psychiatrist. Psychological therapy and medication are often used together.
What therapy typically involves
Early sessions focus on understanding what is happening and finding small, achievable changes that start to shift momentum. Over time the work deepens into the patterns underneath. Sessions are usually weekly to begin with.
Is telehealth suitable for depression?
For many people, yes. Attending from home removes one of the barriers that depression tends to put in the way. If your psychologist has concerns about your safety or thinks you need a higher level of care, they will discuss that with you directly and help you access it. If you are in crisis now, please use the support services listed at the bottom of this page.
Fees, Medicare and referrals
Sessions are $198 for 50+ minutes. Where you’re eligible, with a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a valid referral, Medicare rebates $101.55 per session for up to 10 sessions a year, leaving $96.45 out of pocket. The practice can submit the claim for you after your appointment.
You don’t need a referral to book. If you want to use Medicare, ask your GP for a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral; it can be arranged before or after your first session. Full fee and Medicare information.
