How we help

Anxiety and overwhelming thoughts

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people reach out to a psychologist, and one of the most responsive to good treatment. It can look like constant worry, physical tension, panic, avoiding things that matter to you, or simply not being able to rest.

Common reasons people seek help

  • Worry that is hard to control and spills into sleep, work or relationships.
  • Panic attacks, or a fear of having one.
  • Social anxiety, health anxiety, or anxiety that builds around particular situations.
  • A long-running sense of being on edge that has become normal.

How psychological care may help

Therapy for anxiety is practical. Together we work out what keeps the anxiety going, which is usually a mix of thinking habits, physical responses and avoidance, and then change those patterns deliberately. Approaches with strong evidence for anxiety include cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and your psychologist will tailor the work to you rather than follow a script.

Most people notice a difference within the first few sessions, though the pace varies with how long the anxiety has been around and what else is going on in your life. We do not promise outcomes; we do commit to work that is focused, honest and based on what is known to help.

What therapy typically involves

The first session is about understanding your situation and agreeing what you want to change. From there, sessions usually run weekly or fortnightly and combine conversation with specific skills: ways of working with anxious thoughts, settling the body’s alarm response, and gradually facing the things anxiety has been steering you away from.

Is telehealth suitable for anxiety?

Yes, for most people. Video sessions are well-supported by research for anxiety, and many clients find it easier to open up from a familiar space. If your psychologist thinks you would be better served by in-person or more intensive care, they will say so and help you find it.

Fees, Medicare and referrals

Sessions are $198 for 50+ minutes. Where you’re eligible, with a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a valid referral, Medicare rebates $101.55 per session for up to 10 sessions a year, leaving $96.45 out of pocket. The practice can submit the claim for you after your appointment.

You don’t need a referral to book. If you want to use Medicare, ask your GP for a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral; it can be arranged before or after your first session. Full fee and Medicare information.
